Nowadays, a very controversial issue is the force that the hypermedia has in our society. Walter Ong, David Bolter, Eric Havelock explain that orality, literacy and hypermedia are three different forms of human communication, their objetive is to communicate, but the way they do it is not the same:
- Orality: It is a form of communication spontaneous, intuitive, usually where the message is unstructured. Transmitted orally.
- Literacy: The language used in the writing is in a more sophisticated form, more structure and the speech is more orderly.
- Hypermedia: Two main points have to be highlighted. On the one part, the use of more sources of information transmission( we join to the traditional lenguaje the use of photos, videos, sounds…).On the other part, the use of organized information through an open structure, multilineal, with the use of nodes, links and networks.
So, why continue using traditional means of oral and written, when the hypermedeia can do those two points and still more?
As Jay David Bolter says, the effect that the hypermedia is causing in our society is not only in the communication, we can see its effect on many points of our lives: education, work, new sensations… Summarizing, is not possible to say that the hypermedia has taken the place of the traditionals forms of communication, but it’s clear that nowadays we couldn’t live whitout it.
